Privacy policy
Last updated: 8 May 2026What "FUPCN" means here
FUPCN ("the app") is an iOS and Android application developed by Tom Yates. This page describes how the app handles data.
Information the app uses
- Location data (foreground & background): used solely on your device to detect when you cross a configured geofence (a toll, bridge, tunnel, or drop-off zone). Location data is never transmitted off your device.
- Geofence event history: when a crossing is detected, the event is recorded in the app's local history. You can clear individual entries or the entire history at any time from inside the app.
- Custom locations you add: any pin you create yourself is stored locally. It's never shared.
- Notification settings & preferences: stored locally on the device.
-
Anonymous usage analytics: the app sends a small
number of named events (such as
notification_receivedandcustom_location_added) to a privacy-friendly analytics service so I can understand how the app is used and prioritise improvements. Events do not include your coordinates, your device location, or any personal identifier you provided. For custom locations, the name you typed is included so I can spot popular crossings to add as built-ins. Analytics are on by default and can be turned off at any time from Settings → Privacy → Anonymous analytics.
Permissions
- Foreground & background location: required to detect crossings whether the app is open or closed. This is the core feature of FUPCN; without it the app cannot remind you to pay.
- Notifications: used to deliver payment reminders and follow-up alerts.
- Internet: used to (a) display embedded OpenStreetMap tiles when you view a location's map, (b) open external payment websites in your default browser, (c) refresh the list of supported crossings from a remote JSON file, and (d) send anonymous analytics events if you have them enabled.
Third-party services
OpenStreetMap & Nominatim. When you view a location's map or use the map picker to search an address or postcode, the app loads tiles and search results from OpenStreetMap and its Nominatim geocoder. These services may log standard server access information (such as IP address and the search query you entered) per the OSM Foundation privacy policy.
PostHog (analytics). Anonymous usage events are
sent to
PostHog's EU infrastructure (eu.i.posthog.com), a
privacy-friendly product analytics service. Events do not include
your coordinates or any account identifier. PostHog generates a
random anonymous device ID for de-duplication; this ID stays on
your device when you opt out and no further events are sent.
Payment websites. When you tap a "Pay now" button, FUPCN opens the relevant operator's website (e.g. gov.uk for Dart Charge, tfl.gov.uk for the Blackwall & Silvertown tunnels, pay.manchesterairport.co.uk, etc.) in your default browser. Those operators have their own privacy policies, which are independent of FUPCN.
What is not collected
- No account or login — there are no user accounts.
- No location coordinates leave the device, ever.
- No advertising identifiers.
- No crash reporting SDKs.
- No data sold or shared with any third party.
Data retention & deletion
All data is stored locally on your device. You can clear it at any time from the app's Settings screen, or by uninstalling the app. There is no server-side data to request deletion of.
Children
FUPCN is a tool for vehicle drivers and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change too. Material changes will be reflected in the app's release notes.
